It can easily connect with your tablet and smartphones, but access to laptops and your homes’ wireless LAN is perfect. You can make improvements in software via firmware updates, but the drive feels like in progress.

Features and Design

This hard drive gives a standard black drive look. It weighs about 10 ounces and measures around 1 by 3 by 5 inches (HWD). It can easily fit in the palm of your hand, your jeans pocket or in the travel bag. For charging it uses 3.0 cable attached with a USB AC adapter. There are different LEDs on the top panel showing power, Wi-Fi connectivity, and SD card slot status.

You can view the contents using the Toshiba Wireless HDD app available on Play Store for Android and Apple Store for iOS devices. As you can copy all of your important documents and files from your PC or Mac to the drive using USB cable, So you can view them with the help of this application.

Similarly, the app features a built-in player to watch videos and listen to music, even allows you to view photos individually or as a slideshow. You will love the feature that the app keeps tracks of all the videos you have viewed and how far you’ve watched it and resume it.

You can also open PDFs with the special document viewer screen on your tablet or phone. You can monitor the battery status, reboot the drive or turn it off remotely using the application including the internet settings.

On first connection, you can decide either to connect directly or make it available through the home network. There are two modes: Station and Bridge. The Bridge mode allows the driver to use with public networks like internet hotspot, and wirelessly to the drive (LaCie Fuel and Seagate Wireless Plus both have this mode).

With this approach, you can pay or log in one time, and share the same network with your other tablets or phones. When your phone is connected to the hard drive, it’s basically connected to the internet. This mode is enabled while you are out and about, disconnected from the internet.

In Station mode, the drive is connected either with a personal mobile hotspot of your home or office LAN or any wireless router. You connect your device with Canvio Aerocast on the network. The Station mode allows you to access your drive anywhere on your home network if you have left the drive at home office.

Chromecast enables you to view photos and videos. You cannot access the drive from the smart TV as it lacks DNLA support.

Need for speed most wanted. Because this game is full of drifting. I personally recommend using a keyboard. If you can not control the drifting you can not beat other racers. Choose whatever you are comfortable with.

It features an SD card slot also seen in Western Digital My Passport Wireless 1TB. After inserting card, either manually copies files to the drive using the app, or you can set the drive to automatically back up the card while your insert it. Though you won’t be able to erase the SD card automatically like on WD My Passport Wireless, you have to do that on your camera.

Performance

The drive performs very well on all tablets and phones. Thumbnails for the photos and videos were loaded in a few seconds. Even the thumbnail houses a full resolution picture, or loads the video into the built-in player, after a bit of time waiting for the file to cache. It works for.DOC JPG, GIF, MP4, M4V, and PDF formats. Codecs support is also lowest common dominator: MP3; H.264; MPEG-4; and the like.

Few formats are like MKV and AVI are not eligible with this app. But you can download the RAW photo files to the drive using the SD card slot, but you are not able to view that in the app on your phone or tablet.

The drive faces problems playing and viewing files on Apple iPad Air and iPhone 5s. Even the app will crash if you open on these devices.

It’s easy to back up your photos and videos through your phone or tablet to the app, just a press of the button. You can allow four different users to keep the media separate for each user. But all users can access all files as there’s not password protected.

This creates organizational issues for the drive. On a laptop or desktop, either you map the drive (if you’re on the same LAN in Station mode), or directly connect the drive using USB 3.0 cable. Few wireless drives like Seagate and WD Models work on Web interface allowing your laptop to access files directly from a built-in Web server. The drive comes pre-formatted for NTFS that works for Windows but for Mac, it requires a driver.

Overall, the Toshiba Canvio Aerocast Wireless Portable hard drive is an excellent storage drive with 1TB storage capacity compatible with Android and iOS devices, but have few limitations and ultimately feels like a work in progress.

Managing files with the app are not easy. While the LaCie Fuel and Seagate Wireless Plus both offer a downloadable media sync app to run on your Mac or PC which searches automatically for the files, pictures, music, and videos on your laptop or desktop you can copy to your wireless drive. The manual method is good to keep everything well-organized on your machine, but if everything is filed to random folders it will be a nightmare.

The app is easy to use if you have used network-attached storage (NAS) and wireless drive media drive products before, but you can search high and low on Toshiba’s website to find complete documentation for the drive. You can download the manual by inserting the URL that is printed on the quick start guide with a QR code. If you want to know more about the two modes: Bridge and Station, then you need to explore the manual deeply.

This wireless hard drive is perfect to use for those using Google Chromeacast that allows you to keep your media files in an easily accessible place. But the drive and the app are still not able to compete for the leaders like LaCie Fuel (Our Editor’s Choice).

The Toshiba Canvio Aerocast Wireless Portable Hard Drive ($219.99) is a wireless media drive with 1TB of storage for your videos, music, and other files that demand space on your mobile devices. You can also use it to back up files from the SD card from your camera, which may save you from having to carry a laptop. It's adequate first-version hardware, but it still needs some work to be a full-fledged rival to the established media-focused drives. It connects wirelessly to tablets and smartphones, but access to laptops and the rest of your home's wireless LAN is rudimentary at best. Most of the improvements can potentially be made in software or via firmware updates, but as is, the Canvio Aerocast Wireless Portable Drive feels like a work in progress.

Features and Design
The Canvio Aerocast looks like a standard black portable hard drive. It measures approximately 1 by 3 by 5 inches (HWD) and weighs about 10 ounces. It will slip into a travel bag easily, and it comes with a USB 3.0 cable with a bundled USB AC adapter for charging. A trio of LEDs on the top panel shows power, Wi-Fi activity, and SD card slot status.

You'll need to download the Toshiba Wireless HDD app to your Android or iOS device, which lets you view the contents of the drive, after you've copied your files to it from your PC or Mac via the USB cable. The app also has a built-in player for videos and music, and you can view photos individually or as a slideshow. A nice feature: The app will keep track of how far you've viewed a video and resume it at that point. Some of the other wireless drive apps I've tested don't. A document screen will let you open files like PDFs, provided you already have a viewer on your phone or tablet. The app also lets you monitor the battery status, reboot the drive or turn it off remotely, and set up the Internet settings.

When you first set up the Canvio Aerocast, you'll have to decide if you want to connect to the drive directly, or make the drive available on your home network. There are two modes: Station and Bridge. With Bridge mode, which is best to use with public networks, you basically connect the drive to the Internet hotspot, and your device wirelessly to the drive (like on the Editors' Choice winning LaCie Fuel and the Seagate Wireless Plus). That way you can just pay or log in one time, and share the Internet connection with your phone and tablets. Essentially, your phone is connected to the Canvio Aerocast, which is in turn connected to the Internet. This is also the mode you'll use if you are out and about, disconnected from the Internet.

In Station mode, the drive is connected to the wireless router. It works best if you have a personal mobile hotpot or are using your home or office LAN. Your phone or tablet then connects to the Canvio Aerocast through the network. The benefit of Station mode is that you can leave the drive in your home office, then access the drive anywhere on your home network. You can also use it to view photos and videos on a Chromecast. DLNA isn't supported, so you can't access the drive direct from smart TVs.

An SD card slot is something we've seen on one other wireless drive, the Western Digital My Passport Wireless (1TB). Insert a card, and you can either manually copy files to the Canvio Aerocast using the app, or set it to automatically back up the card when you insert it. Unlike the WD My Passport Wireless, you can't set the Canvio Aerocast to erase the SD card automatically. You'll have to do that on your camera.

Performance
Navigating the app was easy when we tested it using an Android-based Acer Iconia One 7 tablet. Thumbnails for the photos and videos came up after a few seconds. Clicking on a thumbnail either loads the full resolution picture, or loads the video into the built-in player, after a bit of time waiting for the file to cache. The most common file formats are covered, including .DOC, JPG, GIF, MP4, M4V, and PDF. Codecs support is also lowest common denominator: MP3; AAC; H.264; MPEG-4; and the like. It's worth noting that some formats like MKV and AVI aren't natively supported in the Toshiba app. You can download RAW photo files to the drive using the SD card slot, but you can't view them in the app on your phone or tablet.

We ran into some trouble while playing and viewing files on an Apple iPad Air and an iPhone 5s. Opening files caused the app to crash and kick us out to the home screen. When we tried using an iPad mini 3, an iPhone 6, and an iPhone 3GS with less apps installed, the drive worked just like it did on the Acer tablet. It's puzzling because the iPad Air and iPhone 5s are the same devices we used to test the LaCie Fuel and Western Digital My Passport Wireless without any hiccups. This points to a software conflict somewhere.

Copy That
Backing up your photos and videos from your phone or tablet to the Canvio Aerocast is as easy as pushing the Backup button in the app. It asks you which of up to four users you want select, so you can keep your media separate from others users' files. Note, however, that the user folders aren't password protected, so everyone has access to all files.

That also brings up some of the organizational issues of the drive. On a laptop or desktop, you have to either map the drive (if you're on the same LAN in Station mode), or connect the drive directly to your laptop via the included USB 3.0 cable. Other wireless drives like the Seagate and Western Digital models have a Web interface so your laptop can access the files from a built-in Web server. The Canvio Aerocast is formatted for NTFS, so you'll need to install an included driver if you want to use it on a Mac.

Managing files on the Canvio Aerocast is also a strictly manual affair. The LaCie Fuel and Seagate Wireless Plus have a downloadable media sync app you can run on your Mac or PC that automatically searches for picture, music, and video files on your laptop or desktop and can copy them to the respective wireless drives. The manual method is adequate if you keep everything organized on your laptop drive, but can be a nightmare if everything is filed to random folders all over your PC.

The app is somewhat easy to figure out if you've used network-attached storage (NAS) and wireless media drive products before, but you'll have to search high and low on Toshiba's website to find documentation for the drive. There's a QR code printed on the quick start guide and a URL that takes you to the site where you can download the manual, but we couldn't find it while searching Toshiba's main site. Studying the manual is necessary to understand the process of switching between Bridge and Station modes, for example.
